Wendy Greuel for City Controller
Bringing responsiveness, effectiveness and accountability back to local government
Councilwoman Greuel's leadership is grounded in the belief that problems are solved and progress is made when a responsive government works together with the communities they represent. To ensure the government exists to serve the people, not preserve itself or its power, Councilwoman Greuel has worked to increase city transparency, integrate Neighborhood Councils into City government, and improve basic neighborhood services.
Accomplishments:
- Reformed the use of general purpose funds by requiring a more open and transparent process. Under Councilwoman Greuel's initiative the City Attorney is required to review all city contracts worth more than $5,000, and requires certification that funds were not used to influence the outcome of any election or for any other political purpose.
- Created a city-wide program, in which the City partners with homeowners to pay for 50% of sidewalk repairs and guarantees work is completed within 30 days.
- Consolidated bulky item pick-up services under a single agency to improve the system and make it easier to navigate.
- Supported a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Water and Power and Neighborhood Councils.
- Required all cellular service providers to give free access to 311, the Los Angeles City information line.
- Required 311 to post all Neighborhood Council contact information and worked with DONE to implement the reform.
- Supported the installation of video conferencing systems at six fixed locations throughout the city to allow residents to testify before council from the remote locations.
On Wendy's agenda:
- Establishing a standardized procedure regarding the use of Master Agreements in all city contracts.
- Working with Neighborhood Councils to prioritize local transportation needs and create community transit service wish lists.
- Working with local planning agencies to ensure that all community stakeholders have a voice in the future of their neighborhoods.
Recognizing that neighborhood empowerment is the most powerful way to effect change Councilwoman Greuel works closely with the many community groups in the Second Council District. The partnerships she has built with the community form the foundation for her successes.
